What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time is the practice of setting clocks forward by an hour for the lighter half of the year, so that evening daylight lasts later and morning daylight starts later. It was adopted widely during the First World War as a fuel-saving measure and has been kept, dropped and revived in different countries ever since.

The hour is not created or destroyed — it is moved. The morning you spring forward is 23 hours long; the morning you fall back is 25. Everything in between simply reads an hour later on the clock than it otherwise would.

Is it "daylight saving" or "daylight savings"?

The official name is daylight saving time, singular — the time is saving daylight, so "saving" works as a modifier rather than a plural noun. In everyday speech "daylight savings" is far more common, especially in the United States, and nobody will misunderstand you. Both refer to exactly the same thing, and the dates on this page apply either way.

Which countries use DST in 2026?

Roughly a third of the world's countries change their clocks, concentrated in North America, Europe, and parts of the southern hemisphere including Australia, New Zealand and Chile. Most of Asia, Africa and the tropics do not — near the equator the length of the day barely changes across the year, so there is little to gain.

A few places are commonly reported wrongly. Mexico abolished nationwide DST in October 2022; only municipalities along the US border still change. Morocco has no seasonal DST either — it stays on UTC+1 permanently but shifts back for Ramadan and forward again afterwards, so its two annual changes move earlier each year.

Inside countries that do observe it, some regions opt out: Arizona and Hawaii in the United States, Saskatchewan and Yukon in Canada, and Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory in Australia.

Is Daylight Saving Time being abolished?

It has been proposed often and enacted rarely. The European Parliament voted in 2019 to end mandatory clock changes across the EU, and the proposal has sat unresolved since. In the United States the Sunshine Protection Act has passed the Senate more than once without becoming law. As things stand for 2026 and 2027, every region listed above is still changing its clocks on schedule.
