When do the clocks go back in 2026?

The autumn clock change, region by region — and a live countdown to your next one.

The clocks go back on Sunday, November 1, 2026 in the United States and Canada, and on Sunday, October 25, 2026 in the United Kingdom and the European Union. Both changes happen in the small hours of the morning, and both give you an extra hour in bed.

Fall back 2026: every date, region by region

The autumn change is not on one worldwide date. North America moves on the first Sunday in November, Europe on the last Sunday in October, and the southern hemisphere runs on the opposite calendar — its clocks went back in April 2026 and go forward again in the spring.

Region Clocks go back Local time of the change
United States Sunday, November 1, 2026 2:00 AM → 1:00 AM
Canada Sunday, November 1, 2026 2:00 AM → 1:00 AM
United Kingdom Sunday, October 25, 2026 2:00 AM → 1:00 AM (BST ends)
European Union Sunday, October 25, 2026 01:00 UTC · 3:00 AM → 2:00 AM in CET countries
Egypt Thursday, October 29, 2026 Midnight · does not line up with Europe
Australia Sunday, April 5, 2026 Southern hemisphere — already past for 2026
New Zealand Sunday, April 5, 2026 Southern hemisphere — already past for 2026
Chile Sunday, April 5, 2026 Southern hemisphere — already past for 2026

For a single country or state, the full 2026 time change schedule lists both the spring and autumn dates side by side.

What time do the clocks go back?

In the United States and Canada the change lands at 2:00 AM local time in each time zone, so it rolls across the country hour by hour: 2:00 AM Eastern happens three hours before 2:00 AM Pacific. When it hits, the clock jumps back to 1:00 AM and the hour between 1:00 and 2:00 AM runs twice.

The European Union changes at 01:00 UTC everywhere at once, which is a deliberate choice — it means the whole bloc shifts at the same instant instead of country by country. In practice that reads as 2:00 AM in the United Kingdom and Ireland, 3:00 AM in Central European Time countries such as Germany, France and Spain, and 4:00 AM in Eastern European Time countries such as Greece and Finland.

Do you gain or lose an hour when the clocks go back?

You gain one. The autumn change adds an hour to the night, which is why "fall back" is the half of the year people tend to look forward to. The trade is darker evenings: sunset moves an hour earlier the following day, and in northern latitudes that can mean the sun going down before five in the afternoon.

Phones, laptops and anything that syncs over the internet handle the change on their own. Car clocks, ovens, microwaves and older wall clocks generally do not — those are the ones worth checking on the Sunday morning.

When does Daylight Saving Time end in 2026?

Daylight Saving Time ends on the day the clocks go back, so the two questions have the same answer. DST ends on November 1, 2026 in the United States and Canada and on October 25, 2026 across the United Kingdom and the European Union, where the summer period is called British Summer Time and Central European Summer Time respectively. From that morning until spring, everyone is back on standard time — sometimes called winter time in Europe.

The next change after that is the spring one, covered on the 2027 time change schedule.

Where the clocks do not go back at all

Most of the world does not change its clocks. Arizona and Hawaii sit out Daylight Saving Time, as do Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the US Virgin Islands. In Canada, Saskatchewan and Yukon stay put year round. Beyond that, countries including India, China, Japan, Singapore, Brazil, Russia, Turkey and most of Africa have no seasonal change at all.

The state-by-state breakdown and the country list show who changes and who does not.

Frequently asked questions

Do the clocks go back or forward in the fall?

Back. The mnemonic is “spring forward, fall back” — forward one hour in spring, back one hour in autumn.

Yes. The night is one hour longer, and the hour between 1:00 and 2:00 AM local time is repeated.

DST ends on November 1, 2026 in the US and Canada, and on October 25, 2026 in the UK and the European Union.

Why do the UK and the US change on different dates?

They follow different laws. The US date comes from the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (first Sunday in November); the UK and EU date comes from EU Directive 2000/84/EC (last Sunday in October). For one week each autumn the usual five-hour gap between London and New York is only four.
